PENNY DAVIES & ROGER ILOTT OFFICIAL VIDS
Австралия
Добавлен 6 мар 2011
THIS channel is the official vid site for PENNY DAVIES & ROGER ILOTT's songs.
Penny and Roger have been singing, performing and writing together since 1983, when they made their very first album RESTLESS. Since then they have added a further 20 or so albums to their discography. Their music can be found at their website www.restlessmusic.com.au and downloads can be purchased through CDBABY.
Being children of the 60's, Penny & Roger love the music of that magic time, and use this site to put out their covers of songs from the psychedelic era. Some of their own songs reflect their influences - particularly those featuring Roger's trademark Rickenbacker 12 string.
This channel also has official vids of their own songs.... with more to come!
The 2020 Covid 19 pandemic meant that their gigs were cancelled, so they began videoing a song per day to keep themselves musically in touch with the songs, and to send some music out into the locked down folks of the world.

Imagine Justice
Prime Minister Paul Keating gave a memorable speech at Redfern Park in December, 1992. In it he recognised the impact of European settlement on the indigenous peoples of the Australian continent. Penny wrote some of the words in December 2022, on watching the speech for the first time, and finished it following the Voice Referendum in 2023.
We didn't have TV in 1992, so had to be inspired by this historic occasion in retrospect.
We still have so very far to travel, but listening to the words that Keating spoke still gives us hope.
You can see the whole speech here ruclips.net/video/Z6dnDkvdTXA/видео.html

THIS WORLD IS RICH

This song was written by Keith Reid and Gary Brooker (Procol Harum) and appears on their album The Well's On Fire in 2003. It was inspired by the words of Stephen Maboe, and you will hear an article at the beginning of the clip, which will explain all. It's a song that resonated deeply with us from the very first time we heard it. Gary Brooker died in February 2022. His voice was spine-tingling...
SUPERSTAR by KEVIN BAKER

Kevin Baker was a songwriter, folklorist, record producer, from Wollongong, New South Wales. He wrote this song partly about his family and the pleasure they got from sharing music together, and partly about the fact that as he grew older people were less likely to sing at the drop of a hat... and the people who were "allowed" to sing were "superstars" on Telly....

We played on Tuesday night, 19th March (2024) at Brisbane Unplugged (THE BUG) in New Farm. David Bowers very kindly took video footage of us. Here is one of the songs we sang that night. John Broomhall wrote the lyrics and Roger put music to it. It's from our album PYRAMIDS ROAD.

The Jondaryan Woolshed is proud to be one of the oldest and largest woolsheds in Australia. A stately monument, it celebrates the rich, cultural and pastoral history of the Darling Downs region. Sir John Franklin, died on June 11, 1847, near King William Island, British Arctic Islands (now in Nunavut territory, Canada). The English rear admiral and explorer led an ill-fated expedition in 1845 in search of the Northwest Passage, a Canadian Arctic waterway connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Sleeping Child (on Christmas Eve)

War Zones aren't just about soldiers... as has been brutally evident in recent years throughout the world civilians - including children - have been not just affected, but even targeted. As December 25 approaches the terrible irony of Peace to All seems bigger than usual this year.
Looking Out At Mountains
Просмотров 150Год назад
This is a sneak preview of a song from our next album (hopefully out by December 2022). The version of the song here is without any of the other instruments we have added for the album - so, a simple rendering of the song featuring a video of the very "mountain" (Bald Rock, New South Wales) that inspired the song. Penny took the video from "my own hill", one windy day in September 2022.
IF YOU CAN'T FIGHT, YOU CAN FARM

Penny wrote this song for an album called BACKBONE OF THE NATION - The Women of Australia, in 1992. During the research she read many accounts of former "Land Army girls" and looking at pictures of these women at work she was inspired by the youthful vigour and purpose in their faces. It must have been amazing for those who came from the cities to be working on farms - driving tractors, or hors...
IF NOT FOR THE VOLUNTEER

There are thousands of people who give their time, regularly or in times of crisis, to help others. Here in Australia we have seen their faces a lot the last few years, during blistering fires and horrific floods. Volunteers are found everywhere, in every community, always doing what needs to be done. THANK YOU!!!
CRAZY WEATHER (by PENNY DAVIES & ROGER ILOTT)

From Moon Caller (released in 2009). After the COP (out) by our Prime Minister Scott Morrison we thought this song should get a new placard and go out shouting.....Roger played Rickenbacker 12, pedal steel and many other strings, Jed Hudson played bass, JD Ilott played drums, Penny sang - and so did Diana Biara Hand & Tricia Lucas Armstrong.

Where the Pelican Builds Her Nest October 31 2021 Cunnamulla

We were on the River Walk at Cunnamulla, near the mighty Warrego River when we saw a sign that mentioned the poem Where The Pelican Builds, by Mary Hannay Foott. The poem was published in March 1881 in the Australasian Sketcher magazine. Mary was living on the Paroo River when she wrote the poem, and at that time no one had ever found a pelican’s nest. Today we know that pelicans congregate in ...

We were doing a trip out through Cunnamulla, Eulo and Thargominda with the Flying Doctor's Your Story Roadshow. When we went to have a mooch around Cunnamulla Railway Station (as ya do!), we noticed that the boards on the station mentioned the Western Mail... and Roger wrote the tune to a set of words by Arthur Copeland about that rail run a number of years ago. It appeared on our album JUST A ...

@@dennisclapp7527 thank you!!!
Absolutely beautifully done!! Great version. ❤
@@mimmooliveri4163 lovely to hear from you. Thanks so much!
First heard this at the Banks Peninsula Folk Club in Bedford Row, Christchurch, New Zealand in 1973. A great and tragic story but a gift to drinkers and millers.
Good to hear from you. Do you still live in New Zealand?
❤
Absolutely beautiful
Thank you! We are loving the positive messages. Those lockdown days were good for getting out in the paddock and singing!
Oh man, kids ya'll are gooood harmonies. Reminds me of the Oaks and the Statlers when they were all young. What is Ms Penny's instrument? Sounds a little like a mandolin.
Yes, it's a mandolin. Thanks for listening!
A lot of strings.
,20!
I like your version of the song very much. The harmonies do a lot to lift the lyric . I sang a solo out-of- doors version in a hay paddock in Motueka valley ( complete with pitch fork ).I think it was during the lock down when I uploaded it to youtube ..Cheers
Thanks! I will check out your version. Ours was done during lockdown too!
One of the best versions, ever - thanks!
Wow! Thanks so much!!!
Great Duo! 😊
Lovely to hear from you!
The National Anthem of Brewers worldwide. Thanks!
Glad you liked our version x
Great song, really enjoyed your rendition. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for listening and for taking the time to comment x
Yeah, rock on! Do a little bit of Lindisfarne, if you would, please...❤
We will look into your suggestion! Thanks!!!
I really enjoyed your cover very much. I absolutely love this song and also listen to the fine singer, Jacqui McShee from my Pentangle album sing it. Have you heard the late Irish folk singer, Anne Byrne sing it? She released it on one of her albums in the 1960's. A truly beautiful voice, sadly Anne Bryne passed away about 4 years ago in Ireland.
Thanks for listening and yes, we have heard both versions and love them too. Lovely to hear from you x
@@pelicanpen Have you ever performed anywhere in USA? I am originally from UK but left many many years ago when I was a young girl and moved to USA with my parent's. Went to schools in USA. Traveled back to UK a lot during the 1980's and stayed mostly in London. There were so many folk clubs that I went to. Loved it!
@@suzannelawson9215 We performed in Maine a few years back with Gordon Bok & Carol Rohl.
@@suzannelawson9215 we also performed at the Settle Folk Festival in Yorkshire in 2019

Great, great cover! I especially love the 1960's and early 1970's Joni Mitchell's music. This is one of my favourite songs of hers.
Thanks for your lovely response! X
First time hearing this song. Really enjoyed hearing you sing!
Thanks Suzanne. We knew the writer, Harry Robertson. This song has been covered by British folk singer Nic Jones among others.
I love that the bird sang with you too!
You will find that birds join in on all our outdoor live clips! They are best backing singers!!!
Strayed from coastal Alabama. Saw Tull, the Stones, led zep, dire straits, many others in England and other parts of Europe before wandering toward Asia and Oz. Made it home after 37 yrs. Rested up, rarin ta go again.
Saw Jethro tull back in early 70s or maybe late 60s do this song in London.
I never knew JT did the song. Saw them in Sydney in the 70's sometime... always loved them too ...

Fantastic 😮
Thanks friend!
Very good, you two. I feel for Keating in his senior years watching Labor move so far right…… Whitlam must be spinning……..
Thanks Paul. ALP still better than Dutton and co!
Thanks Penny and Roger for reinterpreting Keating's speech in this creative way, and reigniting hope.
Thanks Margaret. We appreciate your encouragement xx
shut up only full bloods have a say and they dont want the voice and all these mixed breeds speaking for them and stealing money
Lovely! Well Played! I saw Traffic perform this in November 1971 in William and Mary Hall in Virginia. That performance etched in my mind forever. Seeing Chris Wood play flute on it launched my journey with the flute.
Chris was a brilliant player, particularly on that album. You are so lucky to have seen the band. They never made it to Australia sadly. Xxx
Beautiful cover , really well played and sung.

I've always loved this song by The Byrds. You guys did a great job on covering it. Very nice harmonies and musicianship!
Before I head your excellent version I was always partial to the Steeleye Span version. Thx for your awesome rendition!

I love the integrity and authenticity of your voice.
Thanks from the bottom of my heart
Yeah, really great cover of JBC. Some nice picking right there.
Thanks so much!
A beautiful rendition of a great classic. Excellent singing and playing as well. (Are you sure that's only a twelve-string guitar? Sounds like 24 to me!) A comment about the language: I hear you sing "cut", whereas Winwood seems to sing "cort him skin from bone". This seemed an odd, old term, but after living in a Italy for years and learning Italian, it made more sense. Here "riso decorticato" means rice from which the husk has been removed. It also refers to the practice of skinning animals - including the occasional unfortunate human, flaying, in other words. As Apollo did to Marsyas (spitefully, because Marsyas outdid Apollo musically, I think), or as happened to various martyrs. John Barleycorn passed his own Stations of the Cross, and gave his life so that we may drink and be merry.
Thanks so much for the interesting comment! I will do some research on the lyrics.
I''ve listened to ten or twelve renditions of the song, and everyone sings "cut", except for The Watersons, in their (or his) a cappella version, where it's "cort". I've checked the etymology via Wiki, which does not support my brilliant hypothesis. But "cut" has not the same sense as "skin" or "flay" or "cort", so I like "cort" better. But I hate to quibble - it's still a great old tune, one way or the other. If I wanted to quibble, it would just be a sign that I need to lighten up and have a drink. In my old homebrew book (by Charlie Papazian), a few very old ale recipes are recounted. In one, called, I think, "Old Cock Ale", one is instructed to obtain an old cock (in the sense of rooster, please!), and to "flea him (flay him?)" - parenthesis in the original - then to let him marinate in the barley malt and hops for a few weeks. I haven't tried the recipe, as I haven't an old cock available. Papazian also gives us a clever motto, inspired by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young's "Déja vu": "Déja brew - we have all been beer before." @@pelicanpen
Hilarious! I have the same home brew book too where you stick an old rooster in the brew. Sounds exceedingly delightful I must say. In our Penguin book of British Folk Songs it does say "cut", however I rather like your etymology. Thanks for the very interesting discussion. x
@@pelicanpen Ah, so we are literally on the same page! Of a book I had thought rather esoteric! I no longer brew (cue sad violin music), for the sake of other commitments, but I have my replacement copy of Papazian, the Homebrew Bible (cue thunderbolts). I had lent my first to an Italian friend who wanted to take up home brewing, and don't you know, I never got it back! But I don't mind, as I'm sure it has been worthwhile.
Beautiful ❤️ History in song..
Thanks lass!
I found this song on the CD "Sugar in the Blood" by W.S "Bill" Oliver. Some of the instruments on the CD are different, although I can't work out what, exactly. I think it's a pipe organ or an accordian. I have zero connection to Queensland, but the music under the words made me burst into tears - and still does, every single time I hear it. Thank you for creating such a powerful song :)
G'day ... this version is a live performance. On the CD we used an orchestral backing created using a synthesiser. Very unusual for us - we usually use acoustic or electric guitar, mandolin, banjo, mandola, violin, flute etc. But we wanted a certain flavour on the recording. We were performing with our son on banjo here. Very special! We are so pleased that the song moves you. Bill Scott was a dear friend and mentor. As Gordon Bok (Maine folk singer) commented he was "...a deep well."
